IR LED mount

by iCON

3d printed Infrared LED mounts for screens with narrow bezels. To minimize the profile of the LED assembly, the LEDs wrap around the front of the screen slightly. To minimize the size of the LED assembly, they are not designed to house the required current limiting resistor. These LED mounts are designed to adhere to the sides of the TV/monitor.

All three of the infrared LEDs are angled inward toward the center of the screen by 10 degrees to allow playing closer to the screen. The LEDs are also angled away from each other by 5 degrees to increase the spread of the IR light.

IR LED Mount Base
rev.1 by iCON on 06 Feb 2024
To improve the appearance of the printed part, use your slicer’s Z-seam options to minimize seams on the front of the part. You can also try rotating the part 90 degrees at a time and re-slice to see if z-seam locations are moved away from the front of the part.

Suggested settings:
  • Print as shown in the STL file
IR LED Mount Cover
rev.1 by iCON on 06 Feb 2024
There are two raised areas of the cover that provide a snap-fit to the base. If the cover does not snap onto the base, you probably installed it upside down. Test fit the cover onto the base prior to installing the LED and wire. The cover is 1.2mm thick. It is a tight fit onto the base, if you are struggling to install it you might have some bed leveling issues that need to be resolved.

Suggested settings:
  • Print as shown in the STL file
  • Support is not required

Infrared LED: 5mm 940nm
Part Number: OSRAM SFH 4547
Quantity: 12 (Required)

Insert 3 infrared LEDs into the IR LED Mount Base. OSRAM infrared LEDs have been found to be the best performing.

Digi-Key (US)
Mouser Electronics (US)
Infrared LED: 5mm 940nm
Part Number: Generic
Quantity: 12 (Optional)

These do not perform as well as the OSRAM SFH 4547 infrared LEDs but are much less expensive and may work fine on smaller screens

Resistor: 6.8 to 10.0 ohm, 1/4 watt
Quantity: 4 (Required)

Limits current through each IR LED assembly. The lower the resistance value, the more current will flow and the brighter infrared light. Just make sure your IR LEDs do not get hot, if so use a higher resistance value. The length and gauge of the wire used to connect the IR LED assemblies will have an affect on the amount of current that flows. Choose 1% tolerance if available, otherwise 5% will also work. Can be added inline with the ground or 5v supply wire or built into the IR LED Power Distribution Box shown here https://diylightgun.com/lightgun-details/?lgid=388.

2-conductor wire: 22 AWG
Quantity: 1 (Required)

Connects each of the 4 infrared LED assemblies to a common power distribution location. For minimum voltage drop, 22 AWG wire is suggested but shorter wire lengths can use lighter gauge wire.
